ConcealThis Poll: How often do you refresh your carry ammo?

It’s time for another ConcealThis Poll.  Those that carry handguns for protection know that you should always have fresh defense ammo at all times and most like to cycle through and swap them out from time to time.  The question is…how often do you swap old ammo?  Some like to do this every three to six months and others are not so concerned.  However, based on all the elements that can take a toll on your carry ammo such as heat, sweat and lubricants, it is always best to routinely cycle through them.

As an example, to your left above is a Federal 9mm LEO HST round that has been carried for 6 months next to a fresh round to your right.  Which one will you carry?

ConcealThis Poll: Do You Pack Heavier Based on Attire?

The last poll yielded some rather interesting results.  It appears the handgun is the clear winner for home defense.  I was quite surprised and expected it going to the shotgun.  This next poll goes out to all permit holders out there and one that many will likely be curious to know.

Many live in areas where attire depends on climate throughout the year.  For example, I live in sunny South Florida and a t-shirt and shorts is what is commonly worn.  With that said, carrying a large handgun is simply not an option.  However, some may live in areas where they may be able to carry a larger handgun or may choose  to carry other options based on what they will be wearing.  Some may also own multiple handguns and use them for this very reason.  That leads to the next interesting ConcealThis poll…

ConcealThis Poll: What’s Your Primary Home Defense Weapon?

We all know that a shotgun is recommended by many professionals for home defense.  They don’t require much knowledge and/or skill and all you have to do is point and shoot.  Even if you suck at aiming, chances are you’ll cause some serious damage.  Shotguns can also cost significantly less than a handgun and the laws are also slightly different in terms of owning one.  But do all still consider it their primary home defense weapon?  We find out in this latest ConcealThis Poll.  Even if you’re a gun enthusiast who happens to own both, which one will you reach for should an unfortunate situation arise?

Having children is a reason to own guns – not a reason to get rid of guns

I’ve heard of gun owners who decided to get rid of their guns when their children were born.  Their theory was that the guns were a danger to the children, and the household was therefore better off without guns.  I disagree.  Getting rid of guns renders one’s household more vulnerable to violent criminals, and a couple of simple steps can virtually eliminate the risk that a child will find and misuse a gun:

Giving up firearms renders one’s home more vulnerable to criminals

ConcealThis Poll: Would You Tell A Cop You Have Gun?

It’s time for another ConcealThis Poll based on the fact that I continue to get asked this question by those looking into owning a gun and getting a conceal carry permit.  So, if you own a concealed carry permit, should you or are you obligated to tell a cop you have a gun?  Well, there’s lots of debate about this and the answer is actually “Yes” and “No”.  Why?  Well, there are circumstances where it can help you and others where it can go as extreme as as getting you killed.

So, should you tell a cop you are lawfully carrying a handgun?  The answer, in mostly all cases, is NO.  You are not obligated to do so and it’s just plain stupid to walk up to a potentially trigger-happy cop having a bad day and tell them you have a gun.  It simply is not a good idea at all!

However, there are some circumstances where it can actually be to your benefit to tell them.  One happens to be when you are being pulled over for some kind of traffic violation.  I personally would recommend you always tell the cop in this situation.  Not only will this avoid a potentially tragic event, but almost always will work in your benefit in terms of getting away with that ticket.  I personally always pull out both my license and carry permit when pulled over.  It will likely get you on their good side and in just about every single case with me, has gotten me out of a ticket.  Whether it’s the fact that showing that permit means you are squeaky clean, or an ice-breaker that can lead to a long conversation about guns, this almost always works to your benefit.  In addition, if you are like me and tend to have your gun in the glove compartment while driving, telling them upfront that you have a gun there before reaching for your registration is a very smart move that can actually prevent tragedy.

So, what do you all personally think?  To say or not to say?  I’d like your feedback from the latest poll below…
