The Real Reason Behind The Ammo Shortage

As most gun and shooting enthusiasts have noticed the past couple of months, finding ammo these days is much more difficult, frustrating and even expensive.  Go to your favorite online sites and try to order your favorite ammo in bulk at that low price you are used to.  You’ll only find that they have absolutely no availability and most popular online sources have been out of stock for many weeks.  Heck, even some respected ammo manufacturer’s have halted production and/or shipping.  I even went to my local shooting range and they were completely out of 9mm, .380 and 7.62 ammunition.  The range was pretty empty and that expensive ammo on those spacious shelves was just not there.  Things are this bad folks.

So, who or what is to blame for what is the largest shortage I have personally ever seen in my lifetime?  While most think the Obama Administration is to blame, that’s not the main reason behind it all.  In fact, the main reason behind the shortage may surprise a few and may even anger some.  Regardless, my intentions here is not to upset a majority, but rather make it clear as to who really is to blame.  The real reason behind the shortage is to be blamed on you, the consumer.  You see, despite the clever tactics Obama is rumored to have put forth, the real reason for the shortage is simply due to consumer paranoia.  Most consumers are just in a state of panic due to the Administration’s scare tactics and/or false rumors that have been spreading like wildfire.  This is seriously depleting stock from just about any online source out there.  In fact, those profiting and taking full advantage of this are the suppliers themselves.  Most of them have even reported the highest volume in ammo sales they have ever seen since they were in operation.

However, does this mean the Obama Administration doesn’t have a few things up their sleeves?  Yes, they do, but what I like to emphasize here is that they have not taken action and most of the rumors and/or articles you have read are completely false.  While this President and Vice President are considered the most anti-gun to take office, that’s not the “current” reason behind the ammo shortage most have clearly noticed.  It is this ideology that has many enthusiasts on a short fuse, resulting in significantly higher ammo sales leading to the shortage.

You see, Obama and its Administration knows they can’t fight the 2nd Amendment and have rumored to have taken what is the most clever approach they can to successfully enforce their idiotic anti-gun views.   This extreme approach is far from your typical Democratic approach and is why many are scared and willing to take measures they normally wouldn’t take or even afford.  Their rumored tactic?  I can’t take the gun away so why not strongly limit the ammunition in ways that will keep many from acquiring it to an extent where they’ll just have a useless large paperweight?  This approach includes regulating ammo importing and slapping a ridiculously high tax on them so that they will be much harder for consumers to own. You can’t easily take away the guns so why not take away the ammo?   That’s exactly what is rumored they’ll do and is why many are scared and stocking up as much as they can.

The purpose of this article is not only to make it clear this has not happened and is the reason behind the shortage, but also to make it clear that this approach, if taken,  is idiotic and will simply not work.  Let’s say they take this approach and ammo becomes just that difficult to acquire.  Will this actually help?  The honest answer is no.  Criminals don’t legally get a hold of both guns and ammo.  Come on, they get a hold of them illegally through the black market and regulating ammunition to this extent will NOT make a bit of difference.  In fact, it will only make matters worse by not allowing law-abiding citizens to maintain the right to protect themselves and their family from harm, ultimately resulting in unnecessary and clearly preventable deaths.  As bad as it sounds, I’ll take it further and say that this will only give criminals looking to harm the innocent an edge.

Folks, in this bad economy that has left many victim to crime, including myself, enforcing this kind of  action is not only completely absurd, but completely unconstitutional.

The bottom line, despite the fact that you can likely expect some kind of impact, is that this new Administration has left many unsure of what to think, resulting in a significant increase in ammunition sales.  Folks, understand that you are only making things worse and only giving reason for many suppliers to take advantage of the current situation and increase prices significantly as a result.  That is likely what you will see if we are not smart enough to understand the real reasons behind the ammo shortage.

Today (04.24.2009) I received email from J&G sales about my order from Feb.02, 2009:
“380ACP out of stock and no longer available for back order. That part of your order has
    been canceled. Sorry.”
380 is not an “exotic” round and is very popular in compact handguns. Walther PPK, Beretta 85/84, Sig 230/232, CZ 83, Ruger LCP, Browning BDA, and many more!
“… out of stack and no longer available for back order…” – This is END of American Freedom!
What is left these days from our freedom?
1- you can go to gay-parade if you want.
    2- …A…??? what else? – Nothing!
3- Now this: April 22, 2009 Assembly Bill 962 was passed in California and now heads to the Assembly Committee on Appropriations where it awaits a hearing.
This would make it a crime to privately transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, even between family and friends, unless you are registered as a “handgun ammunition vendor” in the Department of Justice’s database.
So now if you transfer to your relative or friend 50 rounds, you OK, if you give 100 rounds you are a CRIMINAL and can go to jail! Do you still thinking that your freedom is protected?
This is very simple: Why we have Second Amendment? – Because people with the guns make rules! A FREE people with guns make rules! Slaves cannot have weapon and do not make rules. They (guess who?) disarming America! This is a long process but it started long time ago. Remember Clinton’s ban-1994? Same people are back again. Remember why Clinton was impeached? – Because he lied under the oath. Remember Obama’s promises half year ago not to touch Second Amendment? Do you think they will hesitate to take away our arms, than f@@k all of us and say that this is for our protection?
Internal slippery enemy is much more dangerous than external.
All American gun owners are under attack.
Manually created “Ammo shortage” is another step to attack Liberty.
    Very serious this time.

Many people buy ammo as usual but don’t go to the range as often as before. I normally was at the range at least once a week, this days I go like once in two month. I always had at least 1000 rounds of each caliber. Have about the same now but use ammo much less because it is more expensive to replace it. I’m glad I have .22 pistol and rifle in addition to normal calibers, I shoot .22 much more this days. In 2008 on major territory of CA was prohibited to hunt with ammo that contain lead. For example regular ammo cost $5-15 per box of 20, solid copper that you have to use since 2008 … – $45-60! Now they try to push it for next year on all territory of CA and including .22! Have anyone ever seen .22 not containing lead? Of course it started before new president was elected, but CA local law was always very unfriendly to gun owners. In entire LA county already prohibited to discharge firearm. They cannot do it at once, They do it step-by-step: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, DC… Who is next? It is already almost impossible to obtain CCW in CA. We have our constitutional rights only on paper… for a long time already. You so far can own a gun in CA (with many stupid restrictions) but cannot take it with you. Your gun at home in the safe cannot protect you on the street even if it is .45. I can get CCW from many other states but not at home. I can feel much safer 500 miles away than walking to the bank around the corner. I can understand that domestic ammo manufacturers did not expect shortage, but where is imported ammo? From Mexico, Brazil, Russia, China, from any where else? Is it a problem to find enough ammo on the planet to correct situation?! This scenario of ammo shortage is manually created and very well regulated.
And Obama’s administration is fully responsible. Remember: Someone who want to take away you weapon (or ammo) is NOT you friend.

    Fred,
My thoughts exactly. He only has four years and has so many other things on his plate already that he simply cannot focus one something so absurd…based on what is going on lately and the pressure put upon him from all sides.

    On a side note…

I see the votes here are leaning to his Administration. However, this is clearly not the reason for the shortage and mostly based on false rumors leaning towards them as the source of the problem. This is so far from the truth and it is all these rumors that have caused such paranoia, leading to consumers stocking up more than they usually do and depleting all stock. I wish all these false online rumors would stop so that most will finally realize all is fine…for now!

The people have looked at Obama’s voteing record
in IL. and know he would like to repeal the 2nd
amendment. Obama knows he can’t. IMO he won’t
do anything drastic until either his second term or
he knows he won’t get a second term.Wonder how
much money the Ammo manufacturers are paying
Holder to stick his foot in his mouth and drive up
prices? I bet its in cash…..
