AmmoLock: A New Spin On Ammo Cans

AmmoLock Ammo CanAmmo Cans…there’s just something about a chuck of  metal that has been commonly used by the military that makes the average consumer interested in owning one of their own.  Ammunition boxes are easy to acquire and very inexpensive.  You can usually find them at military surplus stores and if you are a smart shopper, can find these handy storage containers for less than $5 on Ebay or other online shops.  Heck, even those that buy ammo in bulk usually get one thrown in for free.  However, not all are in what I would really consider “good condition” and not all are lockable or completely tamper-proof.  That’s where the AmmoLock comes in…

AmmoLock is a company that offers genuine US Military Ammo Cans that are not only in great shape, but also feature their own unique security lock made from grade 5 billet steel that is practically unbreakable, offering a higher level of security.  In fact, they even have a guarantee that states that if you do manage to break one of their locking devices, you can send it back and they’ll replace it free…for a lifetime.  That’s quite a guarantee, offered in an attempt to emphasize just how secure their product really is.  Before I show you some pictures of the sample they sent over, let’s first take a brief look at its features…

*All boxes are US Military boxes.  AmmoLock™ boxes are in good condition, though used by our troops and may contain various blemishes, colors or varying lid designs.

If you purchase one of their ammo cans, their proprietary locking device already comes pre-installed and they also include a quality 5mm Master Padlock and keys.

Now, we all know what an ammo can looks like, but I’d like to show a few quality pics of the one from AmmoLock in order to demonstrate the great condition they are truly in.  For those that do not know, ammo cans are all used by the military and sold by surplus shops that usually tend to state the condition they are in.  I have owned a few in the past and will say that it is usually a gamble when it comes to quality.  While most state they are in “good condition”, you may be disappointed when you actually receive one.  Most are heavily dented, rusted and just too beat up to consider them useful.

The sample received was in great condition, with only very minor blemishes/scratches and absolutely no dents or significant damage and/or rust was present.  While most commonly come labeled with the caliber, quantity and manufactured date, AmmoLock slaps a large appealing logo on one side.

Although AmmoLock does state their ammo boxes are typically available in “good condition”, I would take it a step higher after owning quite a few of these over the years.  The sample received was in great condition, both inside and out.  In fact, the inner rubber gasket that provides that air-tight seal appears to be new.  Overall, I was very impressed with the quality and condition of the sample provided.  However, please note that all ammo cans are different and you may not necessarily receive one in such great condition and they appropriately make this clear on their official website.  Also note that their locking devices on their ammo cans are Zinc-plated for an added level of corrosion and rust resistance.

Finally, a couple of additional pics of their pre-installed spin lock device.  Note that you don’t necessarily need to purchase one of their ammo boxes to take advantage of this extra level of security.  They also offer their locking device separately for those that already own military ammo cans with a 1/2” hole in the tab.  Also, if for some reason you have something against Master Padlocks, you can slap on any padlock with a 5mm shackle.

So how much can you fit in it?  Well, AmmoLock actually has two options available.  One is a  standard 50 caliber box that measures in at 5 1/2″ x 7 1/8″ x 11.5″ and the other is their FAT 50, which measures in at 6 7/8″ x 8 5/8″ x 12 5/8″.

I usually have plenty of ammo around so I figured I would give you a pretty good example.  Their standard box can hold a full 1,000 round case of Federal AE ammo in their boxes.  Fits like a glove!  Some like to load these up with handloads/reloads and if you do, you will obviously be able to store much more.

If you’re looking to secure your gun, ammo or other important belongings from unwanted hands, the AmmoLock is an excellent alternative to other, more expensive options.  Yes, their ammo cans are a bit more expensive than what you can normally find them for.  However, chances are they will be in much better condition and certainly worth their small price tag.  It’s a small price to pay for ultimate peace of mind.

More information on the AmmoLock can be found on their Official Website.
